BAE poised to seal Saudi Typhoon deal
By Sylvia Pfeifer, Defence Industries Correspondent

    Published: February 19 2009 09:41 | Last updated: February 19 2009 20:40

BAE Systems, Europe’s largest defence contractor, on Thursday said it expected to agree a multi-billion pound deal to provide support and weapons systems for the 72 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft to be bought by Saudi Arabia this year.

Ian King, chief executive, said the company was “in active discussions on the next phase” of a contract, signed between the UK government and the Gulf kingdom in 2007.

The most lucrative contract so far, the al-Yamamah deal, under which Britain supplied Tornado and Hawk aircraft in the 1980s, has been dogged by allegations of corruption and bribery.

The 2007 contract – Project Salam – is worth an initial £4.3bn.

The first deliveries of the jets are due to begin this year and Mr King said he expected to be “on contract” in 2009 to provide support and spares packages.

If agreed, a deal would provide a significant boost BAE’s sales this year.

Analysts have estimated that other orders for armaments and weapons systems on the jets could be worth £5bn, with a further £10bn being spent on maintenance, training and support for the aircraft over their lifetime.

Mr King said he saw “no evidence at this time” of a slowdown in potential orders from the Middle East on the back of the recent drop in the oil price.

Overall, he said the company expected another year “of good growth” in 2009.

BAE reported a 31 per cent surge in underlying pre-tax profits to £1.9bn in 2008 on sales 18 per cent higher at £18.5bn.

It ended the year with net cash of £39m and by the close of play yesterday, its shares were up 3.56 per cent at 400p.

Its forward order book rose 20 per cent to £46.5bn.

BAE said it had benefited from the weakness of the pound against the US dollar – which accounted for £5.9bn of the increase in the order book – as well as awards of new contracts, including a 15-year partnering agreement with the Ministry of Defence to supply munitions.

The company also said it would pump an additional £200m into plugging the deficit in its UK pension schemes this year and $250m into its US pension schemes.

It is increasing its full-year dividend to 14.5p from 12.8p.

          Markus Junianto Sihaloho

New Sukhoi Jets ‘Attacked’ by Malfunctions

Two of the Air Force’s three new Russian-made Sukhoi jet fighters were struck with what are believed to be minor mechanical problems during a training session over the Makassar Strait on Friday.

Air Force spokesman Air Commodore Chaeruddin Ray said two SU-30MK2 fighters, each flown by one Indonesian and one Russian pilot, were undergoing interception exercises when an alarm signalled in both aircraft that they were under attack from a foreign jet fighter.

The pilots reported the warnings to the Makassar Airbase, which ordered both fighters to return to base where they landed without incident, Chaeruddin said.

He rejected suggestions that there was another aircraft trying to engage the two Sukhois, saying radar evidence around Makassar had not detected any other fighter aircraft above Sulawesi Island.

“After the report [from the Sukhoi pilots], a surveillance aircraft was also deployed to search, but no other aircraft was found.”

Chaeruddin said data collected by the Air Force led to the conclusion that the two Sukhois’ “lock system,” which detects enemy weapons targeting, had malfunctioned.

“Technicians from Russia are already [at Makassar Airbase] to check and repair the aircraft,” he said.

The Air Force previously dealt with an unnerving incident in 2003 when two of its F-16 jet fighters made contact with five F-18 Hornet jet fighters belonging to the US Navy, which had earlier been found maneuvering above Bawean Island, Central Java Province, for more than two hours.

Both sides’ jet fighters were close to firing at each other as the F-18 fighters went into attack mode and had their missiles locked on Indonesia’s planes.

It ended with a communication of peace between the pilots after one of the F-16 fighters was able to indicate they were not a threat.

Iran says it has built an unmanned spy plane
Drone's range is reportedly more than 600 miles — enough to reach Israel

                updated 10:56 a.m. ET Feb. 18, 2009

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran has built an unmanned surveillance aircraft with a range of more than 600 miles — enough to reach Israel — a top defense official said in remarks published Wednesday.

Deputy Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said he could not provide more details, only saying the development of the unmanned aircraft, or drone, was an "important achievement." His remarks were published Wednesday in the government-owned newspaper, Iran, and by the semiofficial Fars news agency.

Iran announced two years ago it had built an unmanned aircraft, but Vahidi's comments were the first by a top official revealing its range. His claims could not be independently confirmed.

Wednesday's reports follow this week's announcement that Iran has restructured its military in an effort to improve its air defense capabilities.

The move was widely seen as part of a broader military build up by Tehran, which is concerned about the U.S. military's presence in neighboring Iraq and Afghanistan and Israeli threats to target its nuclear facilities.

Iran has taken Israeli threats to strike its nuclear sites seriously and has said Israel would be subject to Iran's "devastating retaliation" if it attacks.

The first word of the drone came in 2007, when the then-commander of the Revolutionary Guards, Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi, said the unmanned device was designed to take photos of and gather information about enemy positions.

                Attacking drones?
Iran also is seeking to develop a drone with attack capabilities.

In December, air force commander Gen. Hasan Shah Safi said Iranian experts had designed an unmanned aircraft with radar-evading devices that would be able to attack an enemy target and avoid detection. He said the military was working on building a prototype of the craft. He did not elaborate on what sort of weaponry the craft would be fitted with.

Since 2005, Tehran has accused the United States of flying surveillance drones over Iran's airspace to spy on its nuclear and military facilities.

Iran says it is fighting an intelligence battle with the United States and Israel, which accuse Tehran of seeking to build nuclear weapons. Iran has denied the charges, saying its nuclear program is solely geared toward generating electricity.

Iran launched an arms development program during its ruinous 1980-88 war with neighboring Iraq to compensate for a U.S. arms embargo. Since 1992, Iran says it has produced its own jet fighters, torpedoes, radar-avoiding missiles, tanks and armored carriers.
