Aussies hit back at US Marine who criticised Northern Territory women
AUSSIES have warned a US Marine captain to back off after he sledged the sartorial standards of women in Darwin.
Capt John Campbell was slammed as "paternalistic", an "idiot" and a "hypocrite" after he said Darwin women wore too little to attract "nice men" after a night out in the northern capital.
"It's about having standards, ladies," he wrote in a letter published in the Northern Territory News yesterday.
"What are standards? Well, it can begin by dressing in a manner that leaves something to the imagination, to say the least."
He said women “had been conned into thinking that just because you have it means you should flaunt it".
"Come on ladies, don't send us mixed messages. That's what you do every time you dress with less than nothing on."
Today, the captain copped it from outraged Territorians, who pointed out hot weather, a single night out and the sometimes dubious dress choices of the American counterparts put him in no position to judge.
"As apposed (sic) to somewhere like california???" posed Realistic."Go somewhere with quality women, like the Sunshine or Gold Coasts and then make comments."
Nrm of Sydney urged the captain to check out the way young American dressed in Sydney clubs.
"Very full figures in very tiny tight skimpy outfits. Disturbing."
“… these idoits (sic) wouldn't know what standards mean, every time they come into port, they have one thing on their mind and that is how to score a woman and to have it off with her …” wrote Samantha of Canberra.
Others suggested he might have run aground trying to woo the Territory’s women.
"Mixed messages?" hmmm, sounds like sour grapes after someone got a knock back,” wrote one. “… Darwin has a hot, sticky climate. I understand when its warm people will wear less clothes, but honestly when it get to , 'is that girl waering (sic) a pillcase' ??????? It only makes the girl look easy …”.
Captain Kirk of Enterprise said his sea-loving counterpart “has a point”.
“We are talking about a captain here, not some two bit officer and am sure he sailed into may ports and seen all sorts of women. And what you mustn't forget is that many sailors come from the "bible belt" and are decent people and not your rowdy, drunken and brawling lot we tend to associate with the typical sailor.
