Brooklyn mom Laura Sergio found guilty of manslaughter for killing baby girl, dumping body in trash
A Brooklyn mom accused of killing her baby girl and dumping the body in the trash was found guilty of manslaughter Friday.

Laura Sergio covered her face with her hands when the judge announced the verdict.

"The defendant was a 25-year-old mother who recklessly engaged in conduct that caused a child's death," said Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Alan Marrus.

Sergio was found not guilty of second-degree murder in the bench trial. But the now 28-year-old Bay Ridge woman still faces up to 25 years in jail when she is sentenced Nov. 12.

Dressed in black and gray, the tall, heavyset Sergio stalked out of the courtroom without saying a word. She remains out on $750,000 bail.

"This baby got some measure of justice today," prosecutor Jacqueline Kagan said.

Sergio was charged with smothering her 6-pound newborn shortly after giving birth to her in a bathroom on April 6, 2007. She claimed to have no memory of being pregnant or of giving birth.

Court-appointed psychiatrists found that Sergio was indeed suffering from amnesia but said she was totally competent to stand trial.

That didn't deter defense attorney Louis Aidala, who continued to protest to Marrus that Sergio "could not and did not receive a fair trial because of her amnesia."

Marrus was not having it. He told the lawyer to file a motion and brusquely said, "Have a good day."
