Hacker who spied on women jailed for 18 months
Matthew Anderson, a renowned hacker, was jailed for 18 months yesterday after he used a spam campaign to take control of untold numbers of computers - in order to look at everything from personal photos of a naked woman to confidential medical records.

Matthew Anderson, who sent millions of malware-laden spam emails from his mother’s front room, had caused ‘serious and international’ damage, said Judge Geoffrey Rivlin.

But the 33-year-old had not used the intimate material he found for fraud or blackmail.

‘The motivation throughout... was the pleasure and satisfaction you derived from achieving such a massive intrusion into the personal lives of so many others and the sense of power that intrusion gave you,’ Judge Rivlin told Southwark crown court. Anderson was also told to pay £5,000 costs.

The computer security expert used his knowledge to take control of personal webcams to spy on women and take photos.

Anderson copied wills, medical reports relating to children, CVs and password lists as he targeted institutions including Oxford University, the John Radcliffe Hospital and the government.

The father of five from Drummuir, Aberdeenshire, operated behind the front of Optom Security, which offered security software online. He masterminded the plans from a single computer in his mother’s cottage nearby.

But he was caught after the gang he operated with, known as the m00p group, were investigated jointly by Scotland Yard and the Finnish authorities.

The only financial gain Anderson made was from harvesting then selling email addresses to legitimate businesses, making £12,000.

The number of victims was ‘unquantifiable’, said prosecutor Hugh Davies. Anderson admitted causing unauthorised modifications to the contents on computers between September 2005 and June 2006.

Hope is the little voice you hear whisper "maybe" when it seems the entire world is shouting "no!"
