Salah Ameidan runs for the liberation of Western Sahara, Africa’s last colony
12.27.2010– Award-winning documentary filmmakers Tourist With A Typewriter announce production of their first feature-length theatrical documentary, The Runner.
The Runner is a film about endurance, and the burden of being a hero. It is the story of a champion long-distance runner who started as an athlete and became the symbol of a national liberation movement. Salah Ameidan is willing to risk his life, his career, his family and his nationality to run for a country that doesn’t exist. He is from Western Sahara, officially Africa’s last colony and under Moroccan occupation since 1975.
27 year old Salah Ameidan is a Sahrawi – a native of Western Sahara – and grew up under Moroccan occupation. At 14, he was forced to join Morocco’s junior athletics team, under threats to his family. By 1999 he was the triple cross-country champion of Morocco, had won 2nd place in the Africa Championships and was two-time Arab World Champion.
In 2003, during a race in France, he took a risk from which he and his family have never recovered. As he approached the last 200m of the race, he pulled out a Sahrawi flag – illegal in Morocco as a symbol of the liberation movement – and waved it across the finish line in first place. Knowing he would be arrested if he returned home, he immediately sought political asylum in France and has been there ever since.
Today, he continues to compete internationally under the flag of Western Sahara, a country that doesn’t exist. He is not only one of the highest profile Sahrawi activists in the world, but acts as a symbol, an ambassador and a spokesman for the Western Sahara liberation movement.
“Running is part of my resistance,” Salah says. “It’s the only weapon I have.”
Salah has paid heavily for his activism. When still living in Western Sahara, his family home was repeatedly raided. He was blindfolded, taken to prison, interrogated and tortured. Since moving to France, he has been attacked four times by people opposed to his campaigning. Members of his family are often imprisoned for non-violent resistance in Moroccan-controlled Western Sahara, and in 2010 two of his relatives were killed by Moroccan police.
Salah has no citizenship. He refused offers of nationality from Spain and France, saying he would never run under any flag but that of an independent Western Sahara.
The Runner is the story of Salah and his creative form of resistance. It is an intense and personal portrait that examines why he is willing to risk so much for such an obscure cause, and ultimately asks the question: how far, before you stop running?
The Runner represents the beauty and dedication inherent in long-distance running, while also highlighting the virtually unknown story of the continued occupation of Western Sahara. Director Saeed Taji Farouky became a long-distance runner in order to approach the film with more authenticity, and plans to compete in an ultra-marathon during the production.
To facilitate the next stage of filming, Farouky and Producer Elhum Shakerifar have launched a fund-raising page with the website Indiegogo. Indiegogo facilitates a new form of “crowd-sourcing” funds for independent productions, in exchange for unique incentives, like a signed DVD of the finished film and an invitation to the premiere, depending on the level of funding. The Indiegogo funds will cover filming for approximately one week in mid/late January with Salah in Spain during his annual training session. Principle production will continue until the end of 2011.
The award-winning team at Tourist With A Typewriter started filming The Runner in October of 2009. Amongst their supporters is British filmmaker Ken Loach who is mentoring the project. Director Saeed Taji Farouky is a Senior Fellow at TED and was a 2009 Artist-in-Residence at Tate Britain. Salah’s story, and the documentary The Runner, have been featured in sports journalist Pat Butcher’s website, Globerunner, Dubai’s Brownbook and the TED network.
The Runner will be released in time for the 2012 London Olympics.

et pourtant, il y 14 ans, le jeune a été forcé et sous la menace de sa famille de courir sous les drapeau du makhzene:
