Turkish PM likens Syrian events to Karbala
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that events in Syria were similar to what happened in the historic battle of Karbala when Imam Hussein was murdered, United Press International (UPI) news agency reported.
“Murder is forbidden in all monotheistic religions and Muslim sects,” Erdogan said during the opening of the Arab Awakening conference held in Turkey.
“What is happening in Syria is similar to what happened in Karbala, but the oppressed and the oppressors are different,” the premier was quoted as saying.
He added that the events in Karabla were the most tragic events that Muslims were subjected to as they were the reason for separation between brothers.”
Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammad, was killed and beheaded in the Battle of Karbala in 680. The annual memorial for him is called Ashura and is a day of mourning for Shiite Muslims.
The two-day Arab Awakening conference is being held in Istanbul and is attended by Muslim and Christian leaders as well as political experts and academics from 19 different countries.
