Dubai: Dubai is looking at investing in the $5-billion expansion plans of the Panama Canal as part of a string of projects being considered in Panama by several Dubai government entities.

Investment firm Istithmar could participate in the project, said Sultan Ahmad Bin Sulayem, chairman of holding company Dubai World that groups a number of business units.

In its biggest expansion since it opened in 1914, the 80-kilometre Panama Canal would be widened to accommodate some modern vessels that are too wide to go through the canal at present. Ships that can pass have to queue for hours because of congestion on the canal, which handles nearly five per cent of global sea trade.

Dubai is also considering developing new port facilities, industrial zones, shipyard and drydock facilities, real estate projects and a commodities exchange in the Central American country, said Bin Sulayem, who discussed possible investment opportunities during a meeting with President Martin Torrijos in Panama City.

    In the fray

Companies slated for involvement in Panama include Dubai Drydocks, foreign-focused real estate firm Limitless and the Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority.

"Dubai Drydocks would explore opportunities to establish shipyard and dry docks facilities, taking advantage of the huge number of vessels that pass through the Panama Canal," a Dubai World statement quoted Bin Sulayem as saying yesterday.

It would be for the first time that Dubai Drydocks, which is involved in the ship repair and ship building businesses, would expand its operations outside the UAE. A commodities exchange may also be set up in Panama by Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC).

During his talks with Panama Commerce and Industry Minister Alejandro Ferrer, Bin Sulayem discussed investments in two free trade zones, ports and logistics parks and tourism projects.

The Panama visit was part of Bin Sulayem's regional tour that also covered Peru, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Argentina.

Dubai-based port operator DP World, which recently took over British operator P&O, has announced investments of about $800 million in container terminals in the region.

C'est vrai, mais ça peut nous servir d'exemple pour le futur, le temps de rattraper notre retard, ceux qui avancent partent toujours à la conquête du monde les autres reculent.
