CNN criticizes Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara

New York, March 9, 2013 (SPS) - The well-known U.S. channel CNN made Wednesday an interview with the Moroccan ambassador to the UN, in which it criticized Moroccan regime and its illegal occupation of Western Sahara.
The interview, undergone by the U.S. journalist Christiane Amanpour, focused on the documentary “Sons of the Clouds: the Last Colony” by the Oscar-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem, which was screened Tuesday at UN headquarters.
Amanpour told Moroccan Ambassador that his country hampered the referendum without convincing arguments, overpopulated Western Sahara with settlers and violated human rights, adding that he opposed the proposal to establish a mechanism for human rights within MINURSO powers.
She also stated that the international organizations showed that Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara is the most brutal one in the world.
As he was trying to deny so, the journalist presented a number of compelling testimonies by people interested in the issue within the U.S. Congress and Secretary of State, in addition to Mr. James Baker, ex-U.S. ambassador to the UN Mr. John Bolton and the former U.S. Ambassador Frank Ruddy, who said that Morocco tried to teach the Moroccans Hassani dialect in the aim to fabricate the referendum.
The journalist also presented to the Moroccan ambassador a testimony by the Saharawi human rights defender Ms. Aminatou Haidar and other testimony about a young Saharawi, who was killed under torture because he refused that Western Sahara is a “Moroccan” or to say “long living the King of Morocco.” (SPS)

In the remote desert land on the northwest side of Africa, a nomadic people see their homes taken from them by an imperial power. Hundreds of thousands are driven away and forced to live as refugees.
It sounds like a story—but it’s real. This happened in the Western Sahara, a colony of Spain, one of the last colonies in Africa. In 1975 the Moroccans moved in, saying they were reclaiming a territory that had always been theirs. It is an important story that almost no one pays attention to or has even ever heard of.
The people who live there, known as the Sahrawis, were displaced. They now live under Moroccan rule in Western Sahara or in refugee camps in neighboring Algeria.
For years, they've said they're prisoners of a Moroccan occupation, living in dire poverty, sometimes thrown in jail, even tortured in their own country.
To break the stalemate over who controls the Western Sahara, the international community has called for a referendum, a chance for the Sahrawi to vote on independence. And even though Morocco agreed, more than 20 years later, the vote still hasn't happened. This terrible standoff also hasn't received much international attention.
But finally a spotlight is shining on this situation: Oscar-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem has made a documentary film called "Sons of the Clouds: The Last Colony."
In the video above, Bardem tells’ CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that as a Spaniard he feels an obligation to set right the humanitarian crisis that his country left behind. Bardem was not able to get Moroccan officials to participate in the film, but in the second video above this story, Christiane speaks with Morocco’s Ambassador to the U.N.

Je sais pas si tu es au courant, en 1960 nous avons eu un déplacement de population vers le sud du Maroc de la part de Mauritaniens ne voulant pas entendre parler d'un nouveau pays qui ne ferait pas parti du Maroc.

Au Maroc, nous avons meme eu un ministre Mauritanien qui militait en Mauritanie pour le retour au Maroc avant meme que la France donne l'indépendance a la Mauritanie, et il s'agissait d'un des chef les plus respectés de Mauritanie, emir de la plus forte region mauritanienne du Trarza, il a quitté son pays et sa terre natale pour le Maroc.

Pourtant, on peut dire ce qu'on veux mais pour qu'un homme aussi important et riche fasse ce qu'il a fait, c'est qu'on était forcément dans la raison.

C'est ca quand on a une histoire.

non, je crois que c'est á toi d'aller te soigner et surtout soigner ton ignorance, á moins que tu réussis á ns citer l'exemple d'une colonisation plus brutale que dans le SO ! Ce n'est pas parceque la France officielle et donc ses médias soutiennent le Maroc dans sa colonisation qu'elle n'est pas la plus brutale dans le monde!
