ALGIERS, Algeria – Senior U.S. Army Africa leaders recently held talks with their Algerian counterparts to discuss future military partnership events. The Land Forces, Armée Nationale Populaire, hosted the discussions in the Algerian capital during early December.
The main goal was to build a rapport between senior Army leaders from both countries and map out a way forward, said Col. Peter Aubrey, director of U.S. Army Africa’s security cooperation section.
“This meeting was initial army-to-army talks, a chance for us to establish a relationship and propose plans to work together in the coming two to three years,” Aubrey said. Once agreed upon, future events could include partner familiarization programs that focus on security operations, military medicine and engineering. The next visit between senior leaders from U.S. Army Africa and Algerian Land Forces is planned for early 2015.
“There was some discussion of a future exercise with both our forces, perhaps a command post exercise or field training,” Aubrey said. “That’s something we’ll consider for the coming years as our partnership grows.”
Aubrey led the USARAF team, experts from the command’s senior staff in the fields of medicine, training, engineering and operations. Lt. Col. John Casey, USARAF’s deputy surgeon, offered a medical presentation – outlining examples of familiarization events that might be held between the U.S. Army and Algeria.
“Algeria maintains a robust medical system within their military,” Casey said. “They are looking to take part in events that build capacity into that system, to include learning more about medical evacuations, disaster response techniques and medical logistics.”
Algerian officers also expressed interest learning more about how the U.S. Army trains Soldiers and develops doctrine. They also want to know more about how the U.S. military operates in the current fight against global terrorism, Aubrey said.
‘The Algerian officers were very interested in building a peer-to-peer relationship with the U.S. Army,” Aubrey said. “Our command looks forward to partnering in ways that foster stronger bonds with Algeria. In this case.
