  • Blind Men and the Elephant

    Blind Men and the Elephant
poem by John Godfrey Saxe (1816–1887)

It was six men of Indostan
    To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the Elephant(Though all of them were blind),
    That each by observation
    Might satisfy his mind

    The First approached the Elephant,
    And happening to fall
Against his broad and sturdy side,
    At once began to bawl:
“God bless me! but the Elephant Is very like a wall!”

The Second, feeling of the tusk,
Cried, “Ho! what have we here
So very round and smooth and sharp?
    To me ’tis mighty clear
    This wonder of an Elephant
    Is very like a spear!”

    The Third approached the animal,
    And happening to take
The squirming trunk within his hands,
    Thus boldly up and spake:
“I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant
    Is very like a snake!

The Fourth reached out an eager hand,
    And felt about the knee.
“What most this wondrous beast is like
    Is mighty plain,” quoth he;
” ‘Tis clear enough the Elephant Is very like a tree!”

The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear,
    Said: “E’en the blindest man
    Can tell what this resembles most;
    Deny the fact who can
    This marvel of an Elephant
    Is very like a fan!”

The Sixth no sooner had begun
    About the beast to grope,
Than, seizing on the swinging tail
    That fell within his scope,
“I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant
    Is very like a rope!”

And so these men of Indostan
    Disputed loud and long,
    Each in his own opinion
    Exceeding stiff and strong,
Though each was partly in the right,
And all were in the wrong!

    Moral
    So oft in theologic wars,
    The disputants, I ween,
    Rail on in utter ignorance
    Of what each other mean,
    And prate about an Elephant
Not one of them has seen!

    Six chercheurs d'Hindoustan,
    tous avides de savoir,
    s'en allèrent voir l'éléphant
    Espérant tous, dans le noir
(Ils étaient aveugles, les pauvres !)
S'en faire quand même une notion
    Grâce à leur don d'observation.

    S'approchant de la bête,
    Le premier arrivé se cogne
À son flanc vaste et puissant.
Il trébuche, jure et braille :
« Dieu du ciel, mais cet éléphant,
    C'est une véritable muraille ! »

    Le deuxième palpe une défense,
    S'écrit : « Holà I Qu'est-ce que c'est ?
Si rond, si lisse et si pointu?
J'en mettrais ma main au feu,
Ce que j'ai là, sous les yeux,
Ressemble bien à un épieu !»

Le troisième s'approche à son tour
    Et rencontre, en tâtonnant,
    La trompe remuante de l'animal
    Se tortillant dans sa main.
« Il me semble que cet éléphant
    Ressemble à un serpent ! »

    Le quatrième tend la main
Et trouve un genou sur sa route.
« Mes amis, pour moi, aucun doute!
    Il n'y a là rien d'étonnant.
Il est bien clair que l'éléphant
    C'est tout à fait comme un pin ! »
    Le cinquième tombe sur l'oreille
    Et s'écrit : « À quoi bon le nier ?
Sans y voir je peux vous dire
À quoi cette bête est pareille.
    Un éléphant ? Quelle merveille!
c'est tout comme un éventail »

    À peine approche-t-il de l'animal
    Que, s'accrochant à la queue,
Le sixième, sans penser à mal,
    Affirme d'on ton solennel:
« Cette chose merveilleuse que nous avons là
Est tout à fait comme une ficelle ! »
