Qatari Emir: Doha has ‘tensions’ with the Trump administration

Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. (Reuters)
Staff writer, Al Arabiya EnglishWednesday, 24 May 2017 Text size A A A
Qatar’s Foreign Minister said early Wednesday that he did not make any statement regarding withdrawal or eviction of five Arab ambassadors from Doha, Al Arabiya News Channel has reported.

His statement comes following earlier reports, attributed to the official Qatar News Agency, which said that Doha has withdrawn its ambassadors from Saudi, Egypt, Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE.

It was also reported on Tuesday that the Qatari Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, had said that Doha has “tensions” with the Trump administration, and acknowledged that Iran is an “Islamic power.”

“There is no wisdom in harboring hostility toward Iran,” he said, adding that President Donald Trump is facing legal issues in his home country as claims over his Russia links continue. The Emir made his remarks during a graduation ceremony for new army recruits.

The Emir said Al-Udeid Air Base, which houses both Qatari Air Force and US Air Force, is protecting Doha from some neighboring countries, without mentioning any names. The military base, southwest of Doha, has long been a symbol of US-Qatari alliance.

The Emir also said relations with Israel are “good,” and Hamas is the official representative of Palestinians.

Hamas - either in whole or in part - is regarded as a terrorist organization by several countries and international organizations, most notably by Israel, US and EU.

                ‘Unjust campaign’
The Emir also said Qatar is facing an “unjust campaign,” coinciding with Trump’s visit to the region, which ended on Tuesday. The campaign is to link Qatar to “terrorism” and to “smear its efforts to create stability with a known purpose and incentive.”

He added: “We will be after those countries and organizations to protect Qatar’s pioneering role regionally and internationally, and to protect its people’s dignity.”

“We denounce charges that we support terrorism despite our efforts with our brethren and participation in the Coalition against ISIS.”

He said: “The real danger is the behavior of some countries that caused terrorism by adopting an extreme version of Islam that does not represent its real forgiving truth.”

“No one has the right to charge us with terrorism just because they blacklisted the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist or rejected the resistance movements by Hamas or [Lebanon’s] Hezbollah.”

He urged Egypt, UAE and Bahrain to “revise their stances regarding Qatar.” The Emir also said he succeeded in building strong relations with the US and Iran in the same time.

Qatar said hackers allegedly broke into the website of its state-run news agency on Wednesday and published a fake story quoting the ruling emir making controversial comments. The purported fake story prompted Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to respond by blocking Qatari media, including broadcaster Al-Jazeera.

The alleged hack reflects the tensions and suspicions still running deep between Qatar, whose conservative rulers have strong ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, and the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which have outlawed the group.

The hack happened early on Wednesday morning and hours later, the website of the Qatar News Agency was not accessible.

The fake article quoted Qatar emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani as calling Iran an "Islamic power" and saying Qatar's relations with Israel were "good" during a military ceremony.

The Qatari state television's nightly newscast on Tuesday showed clips of Sheikh Tamim at the ceremony with the anchor not mentioning the comments, though a scrolling ticker at the bottom of the screen had the alleged fake remarks. They included calling Hamas "the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people," as well as saying Qatar had "strong relations" with Iran and the United States.

"Iran represents a regional and Islamic power that cannot be ignored and it is unwise to face up against it," the ticker read at one point. "It is a big power in the stabilization of the region."

The hackers also purportedly took over the news agency's Twitter feed and posted alleged quotes from Qatar's foreign minister alleging a plot against the country by other Arab nations. It said the small, gas-rich nation had ordered its ambassadors from Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates withdrawn over the plot. The tweets were later deleted.

Sheikh Saif Bin Ahmed Al Thani, the director of the Qatar's government communications office, issued a statement saying authorities had launched an investigation.

"The statement published has no basis whatsoever and the competent authorities in the state of Qatar will hold all those (who) committed (this) accountable," Sheikh Saif said. The statement did not explain how the remarks made it on state television.

The questioned story immediately was picked up by Saudi-funded satellite television networks overnight. By early morning, those living in the UAE and subscribed to local cable providers couldn't access the channels of Al-Jazeera, the pan-Arab satellite broadcaster based in the Qatari capital, Doha.

Attempts to reach its website brought up a warning from the UAE's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority saying the site "contains content that is prohibited." Al-Jazeera English's website later was blocked.

Regulators and government officials in the UAE did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In Saudi Arabia, internet users also found Al-Jazeera websites blocked with a warning from the kingdom's Culture and Information Ministry, according to the Saudi-owned satellite channel Al-Arabiya.

Al-Jazeera said it was "studying the reports our channels and digital platforms have been blocked in certain countries in the region." It declined to immediately comment further.
