Military tension rises between Morocco and Algeria, daily says
May 7, 2007, 12:31 GMT
Rabat - Military tension has risen between Morocco and Algeria, with Rabat sending about 100 soldiers and several tanks towards the Algerian border, the Moroccan daily Al Massae reported Monday.
Quoting 'reliable sources,' the daily said Morocco was reacting to heavy military presence on the Algerian side of the border.
Algeria was allegedly trying to use the fight against terrorism and crime as a 'pretext' to 'penetrate inside Morocco, something the latter categorically refuses,' Al Massae wrote.
The relations between Morocco and Algeria have been tense for years. Subjects of contention include the Western Sahara conflict, with Algeria backing the aspiration of the desert territory to become independent from Morocco.
Morocco has also accused Algeria of allowing terrorists and undocumented immigrants to cross the border.
