  • Algeria visited by Hungarian President

ALGIERS - Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom arrived in Algeria on Saturday on his first state visit to the North African country and pledged to consolidate ties between Budapest and Algiers.

Solyom, who held talks with his counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika, was accompanied by a high-level delegation which includes senior ministers.

The discussions covered a broad range of issues, including the situation in the Middle East, Iraq and Afghanistan as well as African conflicts and a homespun African plan for economic growth and good governance, Solyom said.

The Hungarian leader also told reporters after the talks that the "time has come for Hungary and Algeria to consolidate their traditional relations," adding that Budapest "wanted to turn towards the Mediterranean basin" to cooperate with states there.

The two sides agreed to set up a joint cooperation agency and "we have reviewed various economic issues for which several concrete measures have to be taken."

The countries are "soon due to sign a cultural pact and another on security," he said.
