The first mobile licence in Algeria was not awarded until 2001, with the actual service not coming online until 2004. Since then, however, the country's population has embraced mobile technology with the penetration rate now at above 60% and the telecoms industry generating some $5bn a year. State-owned telecoms provider, Algérie Télécom, through its offshoot Mobilis, has claimed its goal is to raise its number of mobile subscribers to around 10m, from the 6.8m users currently registered. Qatar Telecom bought into the Algerian mobile market in 2007 with the purchase of Nedjma while Djezzy, a majority-owned subsidiary of Egypt's Orascom Telecom, remains the market leader. In the field of fixed-line, Algérie Télécom plans to up its number of subscribers to 7m from the present figure of 3.2m. To the future, Algérie Télécom looks set to be sold off by the end of 2007 and growing competition in the mobile segment should benefit consumers. In terms of IT, Algeria is, with the assistance of the World Bank as well as American and European organisations, becoming a regional leader in introducing the newest products available on the market. Although internet penetration rates are currently low, they are rising fast and the government's Ousratic Initiative, which offers affordable PCs and loans to Algerians, can only speed the rate of growth.
