BERLIN (ANS) — India, Nigeria, Brazil and Morocco are among the most religious nations in the world.
More than 96 percent of the population in these countries regard themselves as religious. In Nigeria, where Christians and Muslims are roughly equally represented, 92 percent describe themselves as highly religious.
These are some of the results of a worldwide opinion poll among 21,000 adults in 21 nations. The study was conducted by the German Bertelsmann Foundation. Detailed results will be presented in Berlin, December 18.
As far as spirituality is concerned Western industrial nations lag far behind those in the Two Thirds World. And the USA is an exception of religiosity in the West.
In the United States 89 percent of the population describe themselves as religious, the majority as highly religious. This means that they worship and pray regularly, and attach great relevance to their faith in their lives.
In this respect Europeans differ greatly from US-citizens. Germany, Austria and Switzerland score a West European average with 70 percent of the population regarding themselves as religious and about 20 percent as highly religious.
Nominalism runs high in Germany, where one in six church members describe themselves as non-religious. On the other hand one in three citizens with no religious affiliation regard themselves as religious.
Italy and Poland – overwhelmingly Catholic countries – are the most religious nations in Europe with approximately 87 percent citizens claiming to be religious and more than 40 percent highly religious. These scores are even higher than in Turkey with a Muslim majority.
The UK and France are below the West European average as far as religiosity is concerned. The least religious nation in Europe is Russia with 50 percent claiming to be religious and 7 percent highly religious. The religious situation in Israel is in line with the West European average.
