Thank you for contacting the National Geographic Society.

Some have asked what the National Geographic Society is doing for Sharbat Gula. We have a very special connection to Sharbat and her family. In consultation with them, we have taken a number of steps to improve the quality of their lives, including providing medical attention. We continue to provide various other forms of assistance to Sharbat and her family.

While we understand the curiosity of some about the specific nature of that help, the family has requested that we not reveal any details of our assistance and has requested our help in preserving their privacy.

Sharbat and her family live in a place of inherent difficulties, with little governmental infrastructure. They wish to live among their people as quietly and simply as possible with their personal privacy preserved. While they have expressed appreciation and satisfaction for what is being done for them, they have specifically asked us to minimize information about their whereabouts and circumstances. We intend to honor that request, and hope that the public will understand the reason behind it.

One pressing need, of course, is education, not only for Sharbat’s children but also for other Afghan girls and young women. Toward that end, the National Geographic Society has created a special “Afghan Girls Fund” which will work with local authorities and other nonprofit agencies to develop a program to provide educational opportunities to the young women of Afghanistan. Sharbat is aware of this effort and expressed her great pleasure that she may have served as the inspiration for such outreach.

Contributions to the National Geographic “Afghan Girls Fund” can be made online at www.nationalgeographic.com or by sending a check directly to the National Geographic Afghan Girls Fund, Development Office, National Geographic Society, 1145 17th Street NW, Washington, D.C., 20036. An update on the amount donated to the Fund is found on our website at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/do...irls_fund.html.

We thank you for your interest in the Sharbat Gula story and appreciate your taking the time to write.

    Sincerely,
    Julie Crain
