Investigations against Arthur Miller to be dropped
Criminal and internal investigations into allegations of misconduct against University of Iowa professor Arthur Miller will be dropped with Miller's death, officials said Tuesday.
An autopsy Tuesday used dental records to confirm that a body found Sunday in Hickory Hill Park was Miller, 66. State Medical Examiner Julia Goodin ruled that Miller died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, Iowa City police Sgt. Troy Kelsay said.
Also, Miller was wearing jewelry, including his wedding ring, that was identified by his wife, Kelsay said. Miller's car keys were found in his pocket.
"As far as the investigation, yes, we are done," Kelsay said. "It was as we expected it to be. We were maintaining everything in the event that something unexpected was discovered and it wasn't."
An internal UI investigation into allegations that Miller, a political science professor, offered higher grades to female students if they would let him see or fondle their breasts, will go no further, UI Spokesman Steve Parrott said.
In a statement Tuesday, UI President Sally Mason extended sympathies to Miller's family, friends and colleagues.
"The loss of Professor Miller's life is very sad news," Mason said. "No one would have wished for such a tragic end to this difficult situation."
The internal UI investigation began in May, after four students went to the UI police with the charges. The allegations went public when Miller was arrested and charged Aug. 8 with four felony counts of accepting bribes. Johnson County Attorney Janet Lyness said Tuesday those charges will be dismissed once the office receives a death certificate.
Miller was last seen Aug. 19 and was reported missing by his wife the next day, when police also found his car with Miller's cell phone and wallet inside parked at Upper Hickory Hill Park. Rifle ammunition was found in the trunk. A two-day search of the 185-acre park turned up nothing. A hiker from Marion who is a retired search and rescue worker found the body Sunday.
The rifle, purchased by Miller in June, was found under his body.
"It would appear that he positioned himself over the rifle, perhaps even laying on the rifle," Kelsay said.
In a phone call to The Gazette on the day he disappeared, Miller said he feared his reputation was ruined forever by the claims, even if the charges were proved unfounded. He also said he felt UI officials ignored his 23 years of service on the faculty in investigating the allegations.
Private family services for Miller will be held later.
