TWO Australian journalists shooting a documentary on slavery have been released after being held by separatist rebels in north Africa.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed the pair had been detained but had been released after "vigorous representations" by Australia's embassy in Paris.

Moroccan news agency Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP) named the Australians as Daniel Fallshow and Violeta Ayala.
"We are aware that two Australian journalists who were making a documentary in the Western Sahara, in the border regions of Algeria and Mauritania have encountered difficulties with the Polisario Front," a DFAT spokesman said.

"The journalists left the area by commercial flight on Sunday, May 6, and we understand they are now in Paris, but we are awaiting confirmation,"
The Algerian-backed Polisario Front is a rebel movement working for the separation of Western Sahara from Morocco.

It disputes Morocco's right to control the former Spanish colony which was annexed by Morocco after Madrid left in 1975.

MAP quoted sources who said the pair had been shooting a documentary film on slavery and racism in the Polisario-run Tindouf camps in south-western Algeria.
