Algeria's Bouteflika donates $150,000 to flood-hit American town
The small United States town of Elkader, Iowa, hard-hit by recent flooding, received a surprising donation on Tuesday (July 1st) from the president of Algeria. President Abdelaziz Bouteflika donated $150,000 to help flood relief efforts, the Dubuque, Iowa Telegraph-Herald reported. The town is named for Algerian Islamic scholar and military leader Emir Abdelkader, whose "love for freedom inspired the Founding Fathers of Elkader to give his name to their community," the Iowa paper added. In his message to the town's citizens, Bouteflika expressed his deep sympathy as well as his "admiration for the way that [Elkader is] facing adversity with the pioneer spirit of dedicated volunteers and of community solidarity".
