WTCC seeks Marrakech replacement
By Matt Beer Tuesday, March 8th 2011, 18:06 GMT
World Touring Car Championship promoter Marcello Lotti says the series is working to find a venue to replace Marrakech as the fourth round on the 2011 calendar.
The Marrakech street race was officially dropped earlier today as the local promoter had been unable to put together a funding package to continue the event for a third year.
Lotti said the WTCC's preference was to slot in another circuit in Marrakech's place rather than dropping to an 11-event schedule.
"We are currently in negotiations with a couple of other racetracks in central Europe to replace the event on the same date," he said. "We should be ready to announce the location of the fourth race meeting of the season in one month's time."
He added that he felt sympathy for the Marrakech organisers, who according to a WTCC statement "did not receive the expected institutional support."
Lotti said: "Morocco is the only country in Africa today to host a world-class motorsport event. After all the hard work and the considerable infrastructure investments made by the local promoter and the government, it is regrettable to see Marrakech dropped from the calendar.
"I know the organisers did all they could to avoid this sad decision."
