Résident en Malaisie, Élie Youssef Najem offre également une série de dons

Le prince malaisien Farid ben Abdallah a organisé hier une conférence au syndicat de la presse afin d’annoncer une série de dons effectués par son gendre, Élie Youssef Najem, un homme d’affaires d’origine libanaise, résident en Malaisie.

M. Najem compte investir 15 milliards de dollars dans les différents secteurs locaux et souhaite offrir un don de 150 millions de dollars au gouvernement pour les travaux de reconstruction. Il compte également déposer quatre milliards de dollars dans la branche de Batroun de la Byblos Bank ; inaugurer une filiale au Liban de sa propre banque et établir un bureau de gestion de ses projets, qui comptera environ 37 000 salariés libanais.

Il offre également à des ONG et des associations caritatives les sommes suivantes : dix millions de dollars à la Croix-Rouge ; deux millions de dollars à la branche de Batroun de la Croix-Rouge ; dix millions de dollars à l’association Auxilia attaché de conditions relatives à l’allocation de ce don ; dix millions de dollars pour la création d’un orphelinat à Batroun avec une capacité d’accueil de 200 enfants ; dix millions de dollars pour la création d’une maison de retraités.

M. Najem compte également encourager le tourisme par la création d’un certain nombre d’hôtels.
Il a également annoncé par téléphone, au cours de la conférence, qu’il allait offrir 12 avions militaires au gouvernement libanais pour l’aider à faire face à d’éventuelles agressions israéliennes.

"All the allegations against me are trumped up and untrue," Najem told the Malaysian media after he was released on bail recently.

The "self-proclaimed" but largely unknown billionaire startled Malaysian media last month when he announced an unheard of multi-million donation to the National Cancer Council of Malaysia.

"I come from a very important family in the Middle East and my donations to the National Cancer Council (Makna) involve people high up in Malaysian society…I am more than a billionaire," he told a press conference flanked by a government official and his 19-year-old wife.

Within hours, complaints of "he owes me money" started flowing to local newspapers and the Malaysian Chinese Association political party headquarters.

The Malaysian Chinese Association said it had received five complaints, including one for an outstanding payment of RM400,000 (C$122,000) for furniture purchased, and RM10,000 (C$3,000) for locks and keys.

The Star newspaper detailed more complaints after receiving a call from a florist who alleged Najem had not paid RM5,000 (C$1,500) for flowers supplied for his wedding, and from an estate agent said to be owed RM28,000 (C$8,500) in rental for office premises.

Since then, his litany of claims to riches and philanthropy has grown.

So has the list of people who have complained about him taking them for a ride.

Background checks showed that Winnipeg police had arrested Elie Youssef Najem in March 1993 after he allegedly threatened one of the hundreds of women he recruited for his "Bright and Early" phone chat line.

Je pense qu'il y a des miliers comme ca dans le monde, et je suis sure que l'Algerie se fait aussi avoir par ses soit disant princes qui pretendent pouvoir investir des millards, ils jouent sur la fil de la solidarite arabe pour faire avaler leur mensonges

Deputy inspector-general of police tells the media, Don’t make Elie Yousef Najem a hero. In tandem with this, police arrested him yesterday.

To be sure, there are many Elie Yousef Najems out there in our society, many of whom are still maintaining some respectability out of being not publicly exposed. These people maintain a facade of financial probity by driving around in luxurious cars (even though the cars are not theirs or are in default of hire purchase payments).

They boast that they have assets or business or political connections that they don’t actually have. If they have some money, they would buy their doctorate degrees and if possible, a datukship to enhance their personal prestige.

To what end? It is to impress and to give confidence to others so that the latter would provide the requisite commercial advantage if not part with their funds. These confidence tricksters would renege on their financial, business and borrowing commitments; they would make representations in their commercial contracts which are untrue and inaccurate.
