SHE WALKS IN BEAUTY - Ella passa radiosa
She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow’d to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impair’d the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

Ella passa radiosa, come la notte
Di climi tersi e di cieli stellati;
Tutto il meglio del buio e del fulgore
S’incontra nel suo sguardo e nei suoi occhi
Così addolciti a quella luce tenera
Che allo sfarzo del giorno nega il cielo.
Un’ombra in più, un raggio in meno, avrebbero
Guastato in parte la grazia senza nome
Che ondeggia sulla sua treccia corvina
O dolcemente la illumina in volto,
Dove pensieri limpidi e soavi
Pura svelano e preziosa la dimora.
Su quella guancia, sopra quella fronte,
Così dolci, serene ma eloquenti,
I sorrisi avvincenti, i colori accesi
Parlano di giorni volti al bene,
Di un animo che qui con tutto è in pace,
Di un cuore che ama innocente!
