940 million m3 ...c'est rien
Rabat, Nov. 12 (MAP) - Morocco's state-owned hydrocarbon office (ONHYM) said on Wednesday exploration works have revealed "modest quantities" of natural gas in a well north-east of Rabat.
The discovery was made in the well ONZ6, operated by the Circle Oil company in the Gharb region, ONHYM said in a press release, adding that the well will be assessed as soon as extended tests are carried out.
The first six-well program of the partnership between Morocco and Circle Oil has started in September to assess the anomalies detected in the 3D seismic survey conducted in 2007.
ONHYM added that a second well, CGD9, was launched in early November in the Sebou Permit, and works for the platform of a third well (KSF8) are underway.
In 2006, the ONZ4 well has yielded modest-size reserves of natural gas (10 million cubic meters), which will be exploited soon to reinforce the deposits provided for in the marketing contract between ONHYM and its local and foreign partners.
The Gharb basin includes about a hundred wells, and is known for biogenic gas reserves. It is exploited by Cabre and Circle Oil companies.
The latter, which is operating since June 2006 the Ouad Sebou permit in the Gharb region, has committed to conduct several geological studies, and to drill 15 wells up to 2016.
Circle Oil is one of 29 oil exploitation companies working in on-shore and off-shore sites in the north African kingdom.
ONHYM recalls that gas was discovered in the Gharb shortly after WWII, with quantities amounting up to now to about 940 million cubic meters.
