Britain's oldest twin father tells of joy
A 71-year-old man thought to be Britain's oldest father of twins has told of his joy at the new arrivals. Richard Roden, from Walsall, in the West Midlands, said he would not swap eight-month-old daughters Emily and Ruby for anything – even winning the lottery.

And his 25-year-old wife Lisa said the girls, who were born in February this year, have made him seem 20 years younger.

The retired welder, who has 10 other children from two previous marriages, said he and Lisa now intend to try for another son.

"Being a dad at 71 is definitely more tiring than in my 20s, but they give me such a lot of pleasure," he told The Sun newspaper.

"I wouldn't swap them for anything – not even winning the lottery. They have made my life complete."

Mr and Mrs Roden met in 2005 while attending a further education college together, and declared their love for each other after a holiday to Weston-super-Mare the following year.

They married last month, at a ceremony attended by their daughters along with family and friends.

"My first impression of her was her lovely, big blue eyes," he said. "I never thought we'd end up together because of my age. But we are just like any other couple in love."

Richard was born in March 1938, making him 12 years older than Lisa's father Colin Smith, 59, but both parents have given their blessing to the union.

Mrs Roden said that not everyone had accepted their relationship – she said some people shouted "cradle snatcher" at him, and his older daughters took the news they were together "badly".

"Richard and I are soul mates," Mrs Roden, who has another daughter aged eight from a previous relationship, said. "There is a big age gap, but it doesn't feel like that and he's a great dad to the twins.

"People always stop Richard when he's out walking the twins in their buggy. They say to him that he must be a really proud grandad. He corrects them and says he's their dad, but most people don't believe him.

"The twins are proof of our love – a love that has defied the 46-year age gap and the gossips."

But she admitted she did sometimes wonder what might happen as her husband gets older.

"I do worry about something happening to Richard and the twins being left without a dad. But he is fit and healthy for his age," she said. "We are just taking each day as it comes.

"The twins have really made our happiness complete – and Richard seems 20 years younger now."
