Ahmadenejad, Algeria and the Eternal Renewal

Algeria used to be the ‘’revolutionaries’ pilgrimage place’’ as it was well-known amongst third-world emancipated countries in 1970’s and the beginning of the 1980’s. the north African oil and gas-rich country also played a key role in finding a solution to the critical Tehran’s hostages issue in 1979. Our country also made an “outstanding achievement” when it put and “end” to the border problem between Iran and Iraq in March 1975. Yet, it could not prevent Iraqis and Iranians from embarking on ‘their first gulf war.’’ when strong and wealthy countries like the United States wanted the war to happen. They could not also prevent Iran from building it religious state. The same Algeria could not prevent itself from accusing the up-to-then friendly Iranians of backing a banned Algerian Islamist party form within its Algiers-embassy with laser-written ‘’ALLAHS’’ in the skies of Algiers. There started the turmoil in Algeria and there disappeared the slogan ‘’Algeria, the pilgrimage place for revolutionaries from all over the world.’’

Nowadays, similar 1970’s circumstances are prevailing in the country: ‘’high oil income and same populists’ ruling the country;’’ Algeria is back on track; loving Chavez company, determined to be an umbilical cord between Iran and the Western world in their nukes’ issue and organizing even the 9th edition of the All Africa Games allotting more half a billion dollar to host our friends the Africans.

“We have plenty of money’ could say one. ‘’We can afford’’ whispers another, ‘’It is good image for our nation,’’ someone else said and ‘’it is part of politics and diplomacy to get Algeria back on the international arena’’ says another voice. All this reminds us of a well known slogan “PRIDE AND DIGNITY Algeria” read one of President Bouteflika’s motos in his 1999 presidential race.

Nevertheless, others may say ‘’If it did not work in the 1970’s, how can it be a suitable strategy for our country now? The strategy if we may name it so is not indeed a new one, it is just an old method with refurbished mechanisms.’’

But just what is this all for? Loosing another country supporting the Polisario? (CAP VERDE withdrew its backing to POLISARIO this August.) To gain Iran as a supporter for Western Sahara’s self determination plan? To make Algeria play a greater role in OPEC while it is trying to create a gas cartel with Chavez, Ahmadenejad and Qatar’s ruling family? Russia may also back this project. Meanwhile while the Americans are building their European missile shield!? And Russia back to its old bombers to patrol areas near US borders. They may destroy some TOMAHAWK missiles.

In the entire story, Algeria is trying to make lots of noise, some old fashioned megalomaniacs seek to be part of the world’s history, either the positive or the negative, they don’t care! Their acts suggest!? And their Algerian fellow citizens? Those living in the deep and real Algeria, not the fake ones “though not far from some fake military checkpoints”: people continue to face poor living conditions (even if they “ceded” 0.5 billion USD from their reserve bank just ahead of the African Games) and Algeria goes through unknown paths towards the same well-known fate. The ETERNAL RENEWAL, which, we hope, will be safer this time.
