Zambia’s cuts ties with Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

The Zambian Government has decided to withdraw its recognition of the so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), a partially recognised state that controls an area in the Western Sahara region.

Foreign Minister Harry Kalaba announced that Zambia has since broken off its diplomatic relations with the entity.

During a joint press conference with the Moroccan Minister Delegate to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Nasser Bourita on Saturday in Rabat, Mr Kalaba said “the Government of the Republic of Zambia decided to withdraw its recognition of the self-proclaimed RASD and cut its diplomatic relations with this entity.”

Mr Kalaba went on to say that the Government of the Republic of Zambia expresses its “strong support for the efforts of the United Nations under the auspices of the Security Council and the Secretary General to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara conflict, in line with Security Council resolutions.”

True to its inconsistecies, Zambian regime revokes recognition of Western Sahara

                              on July 10, 2016

The PF has extended its economic inconsistencies to Zambia’s international relations. Barely five months after recognizing Western Sahara (Sahrawi) as an independent Country, the PF government has revoked that recognition.

Illegal minister of Foreign affairs Harry Kalaba held a press conference in Morocco yesterday and said Zambia has cut all diplomatic relations with the country fighting for independence from Morocco.

During a joint press conference with the Moroccan Minister Delegate to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Nasser Bourita, Kalaba said that “the Government of the Republic of Zambia decided to withdraw its recognition of the self-proclaimed RASD and cut its diplomatic relations with this entity.”

Kalaba said Zambia expresses its “strong support for the efforts of the United Nations under the auspices of the Security Council and the Secretary General (of the organization) to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara conflict, in line with Security Council resolutions.”
The security council does not say countries should support Morocco at the expense of the people of Western Sahara.
Western Sahara is a disputed territory in West Africa currently under the colony of Morocco. It is one of the few countries still under colonialism, albeit of another African country. It is recognized by the UN and more than 80 countries.
The territory is phosphate-rich and believed to have offshore oil deposits.
Zambia, under freedom fighter Kenneth Kaunda recognized Sahrawi as country on October 12, 1979.

On March 29, 2011, Zambia under Rupiah Banda withdrew its recognition of the SADR in exchange for some bribes.

On February 19, 2016, Edgar Lungu decided to recognize Western Sahara again and actually accused Morocco of colonizing another Africa country. Lungu even swore in Western Sahara Ambassador Salam El-Mami and said “I wish to assure you of our relentless collective calls for the independence of the people of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.” See Daily Mail report here:

Yesterday, Kalaba revoked the recognition of Western Sahara. Are these people normal? Was it in exchange for campaign funds or just personal bribes?

The question now is, what happens to ambassador Salam El-Mami and other Western Sahara diplomats accredited to Zambia and currently in Lusaka.
